Charlene is the CEO and Founder of Hip Shake Fitness. She helps women live healthier through dance workouts and a supportive community. She works with women who love to dance and who want to get fit while feeling feminine and empowered.
Tell me about your business and your why behind starting it.
Charlene: In 2016, I got diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). The short explanation is I have high testosterone, I am at risk for diabetes and infertile. This led me to a downward spiral. I felt helpless and alone.
Dancing is was what got me through this dark time. I’ve been able to gain my strength and femininity back. This is WHY I started Hip Shake Fitness. I wanted to create a community for women to be able to feel safe, live healthier and most of all dance like nobody’s watching. Last year, we were blessed with our miracle baby Theodore. I am so grateful!
What were some obstacles you have overcome as a mompreneur?
Charlene: I’m a new mom and I think the biggest obstacle for me was adjusting to being a mom and an entrepreneur at the same time. Since I’ve had my baby I just don’t have as much time as I used to. Breastfeeding alone takes up at least 3- 4 hours of my day. I had to really learn to prioritize and work on the important things first! I also had to let go and reprioritize.
Was there anything you felt you had to overcome to get to where you are now?
Charlene: Infertility was one of my biggest struggles that I experienced in my life. It hit me like a ton of bricks and I never expected it to happen to me. It took us 6 years of endless doctor’s appointments, needles, sacrifice, and really blood sweat and tears before we finally got our miracle baby Theodore.
I had to change my mindset as I was going through it. In the beginning, it was taking over my whole life. I had to make sure that I still live my life, work on my business, take trips, see friends. These experiences and adventures with others kept me grounded as I was going through my infertility journey.
What is your advice to other women who are struggling with juggling motherhood and entrepreneurship?
Charlene: Don’t forget to take care of yourself. When you make yourself a priority, you are better at helping everyone else.
What are some professional accomplishments you are most proud of?
My business will be 4 years old this year. We’re surviving, thriving, AND growing!
